Japanese Bonsai Tree history

Most people think bonsai trees originate from Japan as most people use the term Japanese Bonsai Tree but they actually came from china with their history in china going back to 600AD. China called them penzai and centuries ago when they were brought to Japan the Japanese words sai and bon meaning plant and tray were given to the trees and that is still what they are commonly known as Japanese Bonsai Tree. These trees are grown for show and no other purpose and are therefore grown by hobbyists or professional flower growers.

Growing Bonsai Trees

Trimming and pruning are required for a bonsai tree to keep its shape but these must be done correctly otherwise the result could be a dead plant. Trimming is done more often than pruning on a tree and involves removal of selected leaves or needles from the plant. Pruning is carried out on branches roots and the trunk of the tree.

Wiring – is another method of shaping your tree but these cannot be done on types that are stiff and brittle as the result would be the breaking of branches and shoots. This involves holding in position soft shoots and branches with wire until they harden into wood and can hold the form you wish this takes months to accomplish but worth the wait to get the correct shape.

Clamping – is used where wiring is not strong enough to cope with the pressure needed to position thicker and harder woods. A clamp is positioned and gradually tightened a little at a time over a period a few months to obtain the correct position for the growing branch.

Grafting – is where a small piece of root, bud or branch is inserted into the tree trunk and bonds with it and grows from that position sometimes different species are grafted together.

Watering and light seek information on these depending on the type of tree that you decide to grow as requirements differ.

Bonsai come in a huge variety with many sub varities under the same main name. Japanese maples for instance come in more than one hundred varieties with each having its own distinct features. These features can include color with many displaying different colors to blend with the seasons. Some plants give a spectacular display of bright yellows and reds as Autumn passes. Leaf shapes and textures are another feature that can differ greatly between various Bonsai types as well as the trunk and branch thickness and structure. Growing these types of plants requires great care and I strongly suggest reading up on these before trying to grow one by yourself either from seeds or a grown plant purchase.
